Corfu Trail south route in 8 days
Day 1. Arrival in Corfu. Meet & Greet by the local representative. Transfer to the hotel in the South of Corfu. Here you might want to rest and spend the day on the beach. B &B in Asprokavos.
Day 2: Loopwalk Cape Arkoudillas, Arkoudillas Monastery ruins, Spartera - Asprokavos. Approx. 3,5 hrs. B &B in Asprokavos.
Day 3: Asprokavos - Santa Barbara (6-7 hours walk). Today's part of the Corfu Trail leads along shady olive grove tracks and through open country to Lefkimmi, the second largest settlement on the island, where you can stop at the picturesque riverside for refreshments in one of the tavernas. The Trail than descends and continues to Gardeno Valley, through dense olive groves. After a short climb up to the ridge you'll be rewarded by panoramic views of the coastline as well as Lake Korission. The days walk ends by following the coastal path down to the beach at Santa Barbara. B&B in Santa Barbara-Marathias.
Day 4: Santa Barbara - Paramonas (6 hours walk) A day of almost level walking during which you follow the beach, passing Agios Georgios South and the Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" beach. The route
leads along Issos beach with its sand dunes covered with a forest of juniper and cedar trees. After crossing the footbridge you reach Lake Korission, where you can spot a large variety of wild birds.
From here the Corfu Trail continues to Paramonas, with its two seaside tavernas a perfect spot to watch the sunset. B &B in Paramonas.
Day 5: Paramonas - Stavros -Benitses ( 6 hours walking). Today you will cross the island from west to east coast! A sharp climb early in the walk will bring you to the other side of the ridge and the inland villages Ano and Kato Pavliana . Along footpaths and tracks the route continues down through Vouniatades, crossing the Messongi River Valley and meandering through olive groves. After passing through Strongili, continue uphill along an old cobbled way to reach Komatiana and further to the east coast of the island, the small village of Benitses. B&B in Benitses.
Day 6. Benitses to Pelekas ( 5,5 - 6,5 hours walking). Transfer to Stavros, where you left the Trail yesterday. A delightful footpath skirts Agii Deka mountain, leading to Ano Garouna, from where the route makes a very sharp ascent to the summit of Agii Deka, Corfu's second highest peak (576m.) After some 20 minutes of climbing, an abandoned monastery in a walled garden makes an ideal rest stop. The Trail than continues down a cobbled mule path to the village of Agii Deka (Ten Saints), and further along tracks and minor roads to Sinarades. In this almost 'open-air-museum' village" you can visit the Folk Museum (limited opening hours!) From Sinarades village it goes to Aerostato, one of the island's most famous viewpoints. Along several undulating tracks with great views over the west coast and inland. The route ends in Pelekas where you will spend the night.
Day 7. Pelekas to Liapades (6 - 7 hours walking). A downhill walk takes you to Mirtiotissa, Lawrence Durrell once called it "the loveliest beach in the world", now Corfu's unofficial nudist beach.
The route continues passing Mirtiotissa Monastery (limited visting hours) the village of Vatos and the Ropa River bank, bordered by pasture and willow trees, ascending into olive blanketed hills to the ancient village of Liapades.
Afternoon transfer to Corfu Town. Bed and breakfast in Corfu Town*
KERKYRA
Visit this elegant town with a large range of shops, museeums, palaces and its beautiful old towncenter. Kerkyra is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. You might want to visit the small islands of Vidos, picturesque Vlacherna or Mouse Island.
Worth visiting are also the old town walls, the Old and New Fortress, Mon Repos Palace (here
Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh was born in 1921) and gardens and the British Cemetary.
For sunbathing and swimming there are several town beaches. Bed and breakfast in Corfu Town.*
Day 8. Travelday. After breakfast end of services *.
